The Core Knowledge science program will be enhanced with the addition of science kits provided by the Delaware Science Coalition: Promoting Scientific Literacy for All Students. Our students will become project-based-learning scientists as they run experiments and explorations using the Scientific Method.
Earth Materials:
This unit consists of four investigations in which scientists learn about the twelve most common rocks and minerals on the Earth. Scientists learn that rocks are composed of ingredients called minerals, and minerals are the same throughout. Scientists conduct tests on minerals and rocks and classify them according to properties of color, hardness, and chemical reactions (FOSS KIT).
Homework is minimal in this subject because the experiments are all conducted in class.

Water:
This unit consists of four investigations in which scientists discover their understanding while testing different properties of water. Scientists learn that water can change from a solid to a liquid to a gas, depending on the temperature. They will learn that water shapes the surface of the Earth and it moves differently through different types of earth materials. In addition, scientists will learn how water is a basic need of most living things and the importance of conserving and recycling water (FOSS KIT).
Engineering Component:
This unit is designed to help scientists think like environmental engineers as they focus on how water is contaminated and the problem of providing safe drinking water. Scientists will plan, construct, test, and improve their own water filters (EIE*)

Human Body:
This unit consists of four investigations in which the students learn about different parts of the human body (skeletons, joints, muscles, and stimulus response). Students learn how the brain is the part of the body that sends and receives signals from other parts in order to help the whole body function (FOSS KIT).

Citizenship/Civics: Responsibilities, Rights, and Privileges
- What does it take to be a good citizen in a democracy?
- What must a citizen do?
- What is a citizen allowed to do, but might be taken away if he/she violates rules?
- What can a student do to make the classroom learning environment function more smoothly for all?
